Re-amputation in patients with diabetes-related minor amputations who underwent physical therapy during their hospitalization

Abstract Background Diabetes-related foot lesions are a major cause of non-traumatic lower limb amputations and associated with high re-amputation rate. Lesions can hindrance in activities daily living, reduce physical function, patient’s quality life. Physical therapy is necessary to prevent these limitations. Thus far, there has been limited investigation into the rate patients who have undergone therapy. This study aimed elucidate modifiable risk factors for minor were treated during their hospitalization. Methods was retrospective cohort 245 consecutive hospitalized presented our Wound Care Center between January 2015 February 2018 received after amputation. Participants identified from admission records surgical units stored electronic medical records. We examined re-amputations that occurred ipsilateral extremity 1-year post-discharge outpatient period. The maximum follow-up period set at 1 year. used Cox proportional hazards analysis examine affecting re-amputation. Results Of 129 enrolled, 42 (32.5%) underwent an average observation 6.2 months (range, 2.1 10.9 months). requirement hemodialysis, ankle dorsiflexion angle, Functional Independence Measure (FIM) ambulation score. Conclusions In diabetes amputations, FIM score shown be emphasizes maintaining vascular endothelial function through muscle exercises improving mobility, relieving plantar pressure walking Patients should encouraged participate
